Udo Lattek

Udo Lattek, born in 1935, was recognised as an Ehrenpreisträger (Honorary Award Recipient) in 2013 as part of the Bundesliga’s 50th-anniversary celebrations. With eight Bundesliga titles, he is the most successful Bundesliga coach of all time. He claimed two of these titles with Borussia Mönchengladbach and six with FC Bayern München, where he also won the DFB-Pokal three times. Udo Lattek won the European Cup with FC Bayern (1974), the former UEFA Cup with Mönchengladbach (1979) and the now-defunct UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup with FC Barcelona (1982), whom he managed from 1981 to 1983. In the Bundesliga, Udo Lattek also coached Borussia Dortmund, FC Schalke 04 and 1. FC Köln, although he mainly worked as sporting director at the latter club. He started his coaching career at the German Football Association (DFB). During his time there, he was assistant to Helmut Schön at the 1966 World Cup in England.

Born in East Prussia and brought up in Bergisches Land, Udo Lattek played for the likes of Bayer 04 Leverkusen and VfL Osnabrück. Before going into coaching, he worked as a secondary-school teacher. After his outstanding career, Udo Lattek spent 16 years as a pundit on the SPORT1 show Doppelpass.

Udo Lattek passed away in Cologne on 31 January 2015 aged 80.
