11 December 2023 – At the DFL Members Assembly on Monday, the Bundesliga 2 Sub-Assembly voted in favour of introducing goal-line technology to the Bundesliga 2. The clubs are thus following the recommendation of the “Football Commission” and the vote of the DFL e.V. Executive Committee in favour of the change, both of which were unanimous. Goal-line technology is to be implemented in the same way as in the Bundesliga, where seven goal-line cameras are aimed at each penalty area for this purpose.

First introduced in the Bundesliga in the 2015-16 season, goal-line technology sends the referee a clear signal within less than a second to confirm whether the full diameter of the ball has crossed the goal line. Goal-scoring situations are thus resolved quickly and the game can continue without delay. In addition, the technology also creates synergies for the video assistants: The signals from the 14 additional high-resolution goal-line cameras installed in the stadium are also available in the Video Assist Centre and offer additional perspectives for assessing game situations in the penalty area.

The introduction of goal-line technology in Bundesliga 2 is planned for the 2024-25 season. The necessary amendments to the statutes are scheduled to be approved by the DFL Members Assembly in the spring of 2024. The practical implementation will be carried out – as in the Bundesliga – by DFL subsidiary Sportec Solutions.
