New collaboration: How does Sorare’s fantasy football game work?

22 October 2021 – At the beginning of October, Sorare and DFL announced that they would start a cooperation in the growth area of “Non-Fungible Tokens” (NFTs). From now on, digital player Items from the Bundesliga can be acquired and used in Sorare’s fantasy football game. How does the game work? What are the special features? And what are NFTs anyway? Here you will find answers about the new collaboration.

  • What is the focus of the partnership between Sorare and DFL?

A fantasy football game with digital player “Items” in the form of NFTs. These can be purchased on the Sorare platform and also exchanged, traded and used in the game.

  • What are NFTs anyway?

“Non-fungible tokens” are digital objects that are unique due to their individual encryption using blockchain technology (non-fungible = not exchangeable). Your ownership structure is digitally mapped and tradable. So, when an NFT is bought, this is noted on the blockchain. Transparency is an important factor here: the history of each NFT can be easily traced – for example, at what price and when the NFTs changed hands. The value of NFTs varies and can change over time.

  • What does blockchain mean?

A blockchain is a decentralised database shared by many participants. It enables information to be transmitted in a forgery-proof manner so that imitations are excluded. Each new transaction is stored in a block that is appended to a chain of existing data records.

Another property of the blockchain is the anonymity of the participants. These are only represented by cryptographically encrypted series of numbers.

  • How does Sorare’s fantasy football game work?

The basis is the performance of the players in real life. A player can achieve between 0 and 100 points per game. Decisive for this are positive or negative actions in the game (e.g. goals, assists, red cards). There are also possible additional points, which are determined, among other things, by the rarity of the player images.

Five players form a team to compete against other users on a matchday: a goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, forward and an additional outfield player.

  • When are the player Items available?

Immediately after registering on the sorare.com platform, users will be able to obtain Items of Bundesliga player Items. In order to acquire player Items, bids can be submitted individually for a certain period of time (usually three days) in the form of an auction. After the specified time has elapsed, the Item goes to the highest bidder. There is also the option of purchasing player Items from other users. In 2022, Bundesliga 2 players will also become available.

  • How many Items are there per player?

Over the season, 1,111 Items per player are offered on the platform. The rarity, and therefore the value of the NFTs differs depending on the colour: Player Items with a yellow background are the most common (1,000 pieces per player / “limited”), those with the red background (100 / “rare”), blue (10 / “super rare”) “) and black (1 /” unique “) are much rarer. Player Items with a black background are therefore the most valuable. Crucially, at the end of a season, the Items are carried over to the next season and can still be collected, traded and used in the game.

In addition, there are “common” Items with a white background that cannot be traded and are particularly helpful for newcomers: If you register with Sorare, you will receive up to 10 white Items for free to get you started. So, it means that you can play the fantasy football game completely free of charge.

  • What are NFT Moments?

These are video-based NFTs from the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2, which owners will also be able to use in Sorare’s fantasy football game. The NFT Moments featuring Bundesliga scenes will be available next year, in addition to the player Items.

  • How many people already use the Sorare fantasy football platform?

Sorare already has 600,000 registered users from over 170 countries, 40,000 of whom are from Germany. The number of monthly active Sorare users increased 34-fold between the second quarter of 2020 and the second quarter of 2021.

  • Why is the Bundesliga working with Sorare?

Founded in Paris in 2018, Sorare has quickly developed into the international market leader in NFT fantasy football. Robert Klein, CEO of the DFL subsidiary Bundesliga International, says: “NFTs are a digital technology of the future that should not be underestimated – especially in the field of sport. I’m therefore convinced that this cooperation will make waves.”
