EURO 2024 bid to be the theme of the forthcoming Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 matchday

20.09.2018 – The entire German football community, from the very top to the grassroots, is backing the German bid to host UEFA EURO 2024. The DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga and the German Football Association (DFB) intend to deliver an impressive demonstration of this support just a few days before UEFA announces the host on 27 September.

All of the matches in the Bundesliga, Bundesliga 2, 3. Liga, the Allianz Frauen-Bundesliga and the Frauen-Bundesliga 2, as well as selected lower league matches, will see a range of activities in the spirit of the slogan of the German bid: “United by Football”. Among other things, the teams will pose for a mixed team photo before the start of each match, while the players will wear the logo of the German bid on their sleeves. The logo will also be displayed on the substitute boards. The referees and various media partners are also participating in this final campaign of the bidding process. Furthermore the Allianz Arena in Munich, one of the ten venues featuring in the German bid, will be lit up in the German colours of black, red and gold in combination with the European flag during FC Bayern München’s away match at FC Schalke 04.

DFL President Dr. Reinhard Rauball: “The DFL and the 36 Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 clubs are giving their full backing to the DFB’s efforts to bring this major international event to Germany. Hosting the European Championships would be extremely valuable for German football as a whole and therefore also for the country’s professional clubs. An event of this nature would send out a strong signal and undoubtedly excite millions of people for our sport – not only in Germany but also far beyond.”
One week before the announcement is made, a clear majority of the population remains in favour of Germany hosting UEFA EURO 2024. According to the latest representative survey by the opinion polling company FORSA, 74 per cent of German citizens over the age of 16 support Germany’s bid to host the European Championships, with 12 per cent being undecided. The approval among football fans is even higher, with 89 per cent of fans in favour of EURO 2024 being hosted in Germany.

DFB President Reinhard Grindel: “We have proposed a bid on behalf of all of German football to UEFA. This flagship project benefits not only the ten selected host cities and their respective clubs, but the entire of German football, even at grassroots level. We have received excellent support for our bid by the German public and football fans. We are very proud and grateful that the DFL and the Bundesliga have given particular support to the bid, but also that all the other German leagues all the way down to the Kreisliga are giving support.”

DFB Secretary General Dr. Friedrich Curtius: “Our bid has been received with lots of enthusiasm in Germany by passionate fans in our fantastic stadiums and the DFB’s seven million members across around 25,000 clubs. It is a great sign to see the active support from the German people for a UEFA tournament so close to the host country announcement. We look forward to inviting all of Europe to a unique festival of football in six years time.”
