29 April 2023 – DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga welcomes today’s resolutions by the UEFA Club Licensing Committee on the continued strengthening of the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Sustainability Regulations as well as the establishment of a working group, which will discuss further cost controls. Among the members of the UEFA Club Licensing Committee are DFL CEO Axel Hellmann (representing the DFB) and DFL Management Board member Dr Marc Lenz (representing European Leagues).

Today’s resolutions address recent developments in European football with respect to increasing squad costs, unsustainable financial levels and changing club ownership structures. The DFL will be represented in the expert group and continue its efforts to strengthen financial regulations, their strict implementation and sanctioning.

The DFL and German clubs have supported UEFA consistently on the reform of the UEFA Financial Sustainability Regulations in the past and have firmly opposed proposals of other stakeholders for deregulation. Future guiding principles of the DFL in support of the European regulatory context were just confirmed this week at a joint meeting of the Executive Committee of DFL e.V. and the Supervisory Board of DFL GmbH.

Hans-Joachim Watzke, Speaker of the DFL Executive Committee and Member of the UEFA Executive Committee: “Discussions on the further development and strict implementation of the UEFA financial regulations are vitally important. I will strongly advocate for it on the UEFA Executive Committee.”

Axel Hellmann: “Strengthened financial regulation and an absolute limit play a central role.“
