Bundesliga match between SV Werder Bremen and Eintracht Frankfurt to be rescheduled

28 February 2020 – Following the postponement of Eintracht Frankfurt’s UEFA Europa League match in Salzburg from Thursday to today, Friday, DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga will reschedule the Bundesliga encounter between SV Werder Bremen and Eintracht Frankfurt (originally to be played on Sunday at 6:00 p.m.). The DFL is thus adhering to its policy of preferably allowing Bundesliga clubs at least two full days of recovery time between Europa League and Bundesliga matches and thus protecting the integrity of its own competition. The same policy was followed last season, for example, when Eintracht Frankfurt played in the Europa League semi-final and in the 2017-18 season when there was a possibility that Borussia Dortmund or RB Leipzig might play in the Europa League semi-final.
Since the beginning of the 2017-18 season, a total of ten additional fixtures have been added per season to ensure sufficient recovery time, five of which are on Monday evenings. In this instance, however, rescheduling the Bundesliga match on Monday would not be beneficial, as both clubs would then have only one full day of recovery before their encounter in the DFB-Pokal quarter final (Wednesday, 8:45 p.m.). The DFL is in contact with both clubs, the Zentrale Informationsstelle Sporteinsätze (ZIS) and the TV broadcaster Sky with regard to the new match date.
Given the packed calendar, the latest possible alternative date for the match is in calendar week 20, between Bundesliga matchdays 33 and 34. Earlier options for the match date depend on Eintracht Frankfurt’s performance in the Europa League.
