15 March 2023 – All 36 clubs of the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 have submitted their documentation to the DFL on time for the licensing process ahead of the upcoming 2023-24 season. The deadline for submissions was today (15 March) at 3:30 p.m. The deadline for applicants from 3. Liga seeking a licence for Bundesliga 2 was 1 March. Eleven 3. Liga clubs took this opportunity and submitted appropriate documentation.

The next step will involve the DFL examining a range of criteria with a view to ensuring honest and fair competition. In addition to the financial criteria for establishing the economic performance of the total of 47 clubs, additional areas include sporting, legal, administrative and stadium-related (infrastructure and media technology) criteria, as well as – for the first time – criteria pertaining to sustainability and the Virtual Bundesliga.

Clubs are expected to be informed of the preliminary decision regarding the granting of licences in the second half of April.

In examining various criteria, the DFL can impose conditions or stipulations on applicants in accordance with its licensing regulations. One condition stipulates that certain requirements must be met by a set date before the new season begins so that – subject to all other criteria being satisfied – a licence can be issued. Another condition defines the criteria that must be maintained throughout the relevant season once a licence has been issued.
