Electronic Program Guide launched together with three Bundesliga Clubs

21 September 2020 – The new Bundesliga season has started! With football fans around the world thrilled about the start of the new season they will have a feature that allows them to find out where and when to watch the next Bundesliga match with one click. The DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga had launched its Electronic Program Guide last season within the Official Bundesliga App and on Bundesliga.com. Now, the feature is also available to football fans of Eintracht Frankfurt, FC Schalke 04 and Borussia Mönchengladbach on their digital platforms as well.

With the launch the three clubs provide their fans easy access to broadcasting information via their official Apps and websites from anywhere in the world. The Electronic Program Guide detects the location of the user based on their IP address and uses this to display information on the service and on the channel that matches will be aired on in their region, without any input from the user.

“With the EPG, we have added a useful feature to our app thanks to the DFL. Our fans can now find out at a glance on which channel our team’s matches can be watched. Especially when travelling abroad, this is a valuable service that will certainly be well received.” (Andreas Cüppers, Head of Digital Development, Borussia Mönchengladbach)

Andreas Heyden, EVP Digital Innovation at DFL Group, says: “We are committed to establish an innovation ecosystem that provides additional value to the broadcasting partners, clubs and fans around the world. This includes developing services for all Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 clubs that require minimum effort by the clubs themselves as a seamless integration to their platforms is ensured.”

After launching the service now with the first three Bundesliga clubs, more interest in the feature is arising. Söhnke Preuß, Vice President Digital, of sports marketing agency SPORTFIVE who accompanied the launch of the EPG at Borussia Mönchengladbach, already points out the potential of the service for fans and clubs in the coming months: “Together with the DFL, we want to create further added value for fans at home and abroad. The EPG is to become a seamless part of the fan experience and serves users as a guide to where and when they can follow their club on TV. With Borussia Mönchengladbach we were able to find a great club to launch the solution. We will successively offer the EPG to all our app customers”.

The feature of course will also continue to be present on the Bundesliga platforms as the league is currently broadcasting in more than 200 FIFA member countries around the world and has the potential to reach more than one billion homes. Now, the Electronic Program Guide will further help to ensure that all fans – either on the league’s or the club’s platforms – can enjoy live football from all around the world when the league kicks off in September.
