Bundesliga Match Facts: Match Momentum expands the data offering

18 September 2025 – The Bundesliga Match Facts powered by AWS have been expanded with a new metric: Match Momentum. This addition brings the total number of Bundesliga Match Facts to 16, offering comprehensive and advanced real-time analyses.
Did a goal come “out of nowhere” or was it foreseeable? Did a team hold on to the result despite massive dominance by the opposing team, and was there a noticeable turning point in the game? Match Momentum provides data-driven insight into the course of the game by calculating the offensive activities of both teams every minute – based on the actions of the last five minutes – and comparing them with each other. In addition to goals, important factors that are taken into account include shots on goal (including xG and xSave values), advances into the attacking zone, crosses, corner kicks, ball receptions in the penalty area, free kicks in the attacking third, possession in the opponent’s half, and sending-offs.

Each team can achieve a value between 0 (no own offensive threat) and 10 (maximum own offensive threat). The value displayed as momentum is the difference between the values of both teams – shown over time. The scale ranges from 10 for the home team to 10 for the away team. The calculation is restarted at the beginning of each half, so both teams start each half at zero.
Match Momentum will debut this weekend during Matchday 4 of the Bundesliga and Matchday 6 of Bundesliga 2. The new statistic will be displayed as a full-screen graphic during halftime or after the match and will also appear situationally during games. For instance, it may be shown during significant shifts in the flow of the game, a complete momentum reversal, or key events.
Since the start of 2020, the DFL and AWS have collaborated on numerous projects, including the use of data analytics. The partnership has enabled the live processing of data into innovative statistics, resulting in Bundesliga Match Facts powered by AWS. They can help audiences better understand the performance and game strategy of teams and offer deeper insights into the performances of their favourite players and teams. Bundesliga Match Facts are made available on broadcasts, through the Bundesliga platforms and channels, as well as in the Bundesliga app.
