German professional football is one of the first European sporting organisations to have an external Ombudsman for the protection of sports competition.

Lawyer Dr Carsten Thiel von Herff was appointed within the framework of the project “Together against match fixing – Don’t play the wrong game!”. In his role as Ombudsman, he acts as an independent contact for whistleblowers reporting indications of planned or concerted match fixing. He also acts in an advisory capacity on matters concerning possible suspicions and dangerous situations. Indications and information can also be disclosed anonymously, to ensure they are treated confidentially. The Ombudsman reviews the indications and forwards them to the legal departments of the DFL and the DFB. Together they assess the validity of the disclosures, and what appropriate action is to be taken.
